Introduction

If you notice a charge that you didn't make on your Bank of America account, or if a charge that you did make is higher than it was supposed to be, you should learn how to dispute a charge with the bank. You have a couple of different ways for doing so, but there are a few things you should do first.

What You'll Need

You must begin the dispute within 60 days of the date of the bank statement which shows the charge you want to dispute. You can check on the status of your claim by checking your inbox in your online account or in the Bank of America mobile app. It will be located in the Status Tracker section. Just click or tap on the claim to see the details.

Look into the charge in greater detail.

It might not be a fraudulent charge or a charge made in error. It is possible that you or some other person with access to your account made it and then forgot, or that you had something on autopay that you forgot about. It could be that you purchased some extra features, or paid for a year's subscription to something instead of a month's, all without intending to.
If the charge really is an error or fraud and not a mistake, continue with the next step.

Contact the merchant and ask them about the charge.

It is possible that the merchant made the charge in error, and will fix it for you if you just bring it to their attention. Additionally, Bank of America may require you to try to work things out with the merchant first, so this is a time-saving move.
If things don't work out with the merchant, continue with the next step.
