Are you planning to switch from your current provider to AT&T? The process is simple and hassle-free. In most cases, you can keep your existing phone number and device; just choose the plan that fits your needs and follow the steps to transfer your number. Switching is also usually free. However, if you’re still under contract with your current provider, an early termination fee may apply. You’ll also need to pay any remaining balance on your account before making the switch. Ready to get started? Continue reading for step-by-step instructions on how to switch to AT&T.
The first step to switching to AT&T is choosing the right cellphone plan. Consider factors such as device compatibility (or whether you plan to purchase a new device from AT&T), your data usage, budget, network coverage, international calling or roaming needs, hotspot allowances, and available security features.
You may want to explore AT&T’s unlimited plans, which typically include access to 5G, hotspot data, and high-speed performance. If you’re looking to save more, consider bundling your services; for example, combining AT&T Fiber with wireless service. Contact AT&T to learn more about available bundles and offers.
Do you already own a device? You may be able to save up to $360 when you bring your own smartphone to AT&T. However, you’ll need to check first if your device is compatible with AT&T’s network. To do this, use AT&T’s compatibility tool; simply enter your device’s IMEI number and click Continue.
To find your IMEI number, dial *#06# on your device or go to Settings > General > About.
If your device is compatible, the next step is to unlock it. You’ll need to contact your current provider for instructions on how to unlock it.
Note: You can also purchase a new device directly from AT&T, including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches.
Switching to AT&T doesn't mean you have to let go of your old number. You can still keep your number and enjoy the services offered by AT&T. To find out if you're number is eligible, use this tool. Just enter your 10-digit number and click Check My Number.
Once it's available, check with your provider for the transfer PIN and account number.
Your current phone service will remain active until you authorize and complete the transfer. AT&T will send you a confirmation text once the process is finished. After the transfer is complete, your previous service will be automatically canceled. If any issues arise during the transfer, AT&T will notify you via text message.
You may experience temporary mixed service for up to four hours after the transfer. If you have any concerns, contact AT&T Customer Support for assistance.
Ready to switch? AT&T’s most affordable option is the Unlimited Starter SL plan, which includes unlimited talk, text, and data, along with 5 GB of mobile hotspot data. Before making the switch, check with your current provider for any early termination fees first and settle any outstanding balances to avoid issues during the transfer. You may also want to use your own compatible phone to save money when switching providers. If you have additional devices, such as tablets or smartwatches, you can bring those to AT&T as well.
