What are the hours and when should I call?
American Airlines operates the call center for this 800-433-7300 phone number 24 hours, 7 days. The short answer is that you should call on a Friday. This observation and the following section are based on analysis of a sample set of 6,902 calls made in the last 90 days using our free, web-based phone (see above).
When you use our free AI-powered phone to call and talk, wait on hold, or navigate for you, it will automatically wait until the American Airlines call center opens before trying to call. It will ask your permission before it places the call, so you can also further delay that scheduled call until you are ready. But that means you can "set it and forget it" ahead of time.
An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this American Airlines phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like American Airlines staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.
The least busy time to call
The least busy day to call American Airlines is Sunday. The most busy day to call is Monday, which averages 21% more phone calls by comparison.Again, this is based on a sample of 6,902 calls made with our AI-powered, web-based phone in the last 90 days.

The shortest wait on hold
We measured the shortest hold times to be on Friday. The longest wait in the queue on average occurs on Saturday, which is 632% longer than the minimum. As you can see, there is more fluctuation in hold time over the course of the week than there is in call volume.
In summation, the best day to call American Airlines is Friday. It isn't the least busy day, but the fact that hold times are shortest combined with it being on the busy side tells us that American Airlines staffs up on Friday to handle the higher call volume, and that makes it the best time to call.
This American Airlines service number is set up to offer general support to the company’s customers. It is an all-purpose number that provides access to information about everything from flight reservations and ticket refunds to baggage issues and accommodations for special needs.
When I called this number, I was greeted by an automated message that detailed the breadth of customer service options available on the American Airlines website and the company’s mobile app. This message is roughly a minute long, and it can't be skipped. It’s pretty easy to get the impression that American Airlines would prefer that customers use online self-service options rather than calling for support.
I was calling customer service to check on the details of an upcoming flight reservation. To my surprise, as soon as the line’s initial automated message ended, another automated voice identified me by name and asked what I needed help with. While I momentarily thought I might be living the plot of a sci-fi movie, I realized that American Airlines was pulling this data from the reservation I’d made the day before.
This line operates primarily by voice command rather than a menu system. I found this somewhat frustrating, as I had difficulty getting the system to recognize what I was saying. Eventually, I was able to get across that I wanted to speak to a customer service representative, I was informed that the estimated wait time for speaking to a rep was 13 to 18 minutes. Conveniently, the system does offer an automatic callback option. I chose to take advantage of this option rather than wait on hold.
Just under 10 minutes after my initial call, I received a callback from an American Airlines rep. She quickly pulled up the details of my upcoming travel itinerary and alerted me that I’d neglected to reserve a seat on one of my flights. She was able to swiftly and efficiently update the ticket for that flight with a seat reservation.
The entirety of my call didn’t take much longer than five minutes. The fact that American’s system immediately connects their customer’s phone numbers to their current reservation meant that I didn’t have to provide much information at all to the representative — she already had all the details of my travel right in front of her.
I would feel confident calling this American Airlines number again if I had questions or issues with upcoming travel plans. The system is set up efficiently and is very customer-friendly. If you want to save some wait time, it might also be a good idea to check out the company’s website and mobile app — it’s clear that American Airlines would like customers to be able to resolve issues via self-service as well.
