How Do I Place a Security Freeze on My Equifax Account?

If you need to temporarily freeze your Equifax account in order to protect it, you can place a freeze in three ways. You can do it online if you have or register for a myEquifax account. You can do it by phone using your security questions or a PIN verification text. You can also do it by mail if you provide copies of ID validation documents.

If you have had your Equifax password compromised, had your identity stolen, or have another reason to fear that others can access your Equifax account, you may want to place a security freeze on it until you can get everything sorted out. Here are the instructions for doing that.

Placing a Freeze Online

You will need to create a myEquifax account first if you haven't already done so. To do that, follow these instructions:

Go to the myEquifax sign in page.
Scroll down until you see "Don't have a myEquifax account? Register Now."
Click on the Register Now link.
Fill out all of the Personal Information and Current Address fields.
Complete the Captcha.
Click on Continue.
Choose a password. Equifax will send you an email.
Open up the email and verify your account.

Then, to place the freeze on your account, follow these instructions:

Go to the Equifax site.
Log in to your account.
Click on the Personal tab.
Select Credit Reporting Service.
Click on Place a Freeze. You will be taken to the myEquifax site where you can place the freeze.
Follow the instructions you are given.

Placing a Freeze by Phone

To place a freeze over the phone, follow these instructions:

Call Equifax.
Tell the customer service representative you want to place a freeze on your account.
Provide any information requested.
Choose to verify your identity either by receiving a verification PIN text or by answering security questions.
Answer the security questions or tell the representative your PIN once you receive it.

Placing a Freeze by Mail

To place a freeze by mail, follow these instructions:

Go to the Security Freeze Request Form download page.
Download the form.
Print it out.
Fill out the form.
Put the form in an envelope along with copies of the verification documents from the list below.
Mail it to the mailing address provided on the form. You will receive confirmation of the freeze once Equifax has verified your identity.
