The most confusing thing about calling Illinois Vehicle Services Department (DMV) is that the recorded greeting thanks you for calling the Secretary of State. At first, that can be confusing, especially if this is your first time calling the DMV. However, despite this, it is the right number if you need to take care of a licensing issue. In my case, I wanted some information on the forms that I would be required to have with me to upgrade my current license from a driver's license to a REAL ID so that I can travel with it. Since I am leaving soon, I wanted to make sure that I got the process right the first time.

A phone call to the Illinois Vehicle Services Department can take some time because there seems to be an endless amount of directories, but if you hang on, you will get to talk to a real person quickly. The end result paid off, but it would have been nice if I wasn't stuck attempting to navigate through so many directory boards while handling other things in my home. It is the one thing that made my phone call take longer than it really should have.

The first directory was quite long. It listed out over ten things, but the REAL ID questions were associated with option 2, so I chose that after listening to a few more that didn't seem to have anything to do with the DMV. However, then I had another long list to choose from and eventually chose to wait on the line for more options, which meant I had to listen to a third directory. At this point, the process seemed a bit exhausting, and I called close to closing time, so I was worried that no one would answer the phone.

To my surprise, once I navigated my way through the directory, a customer service representative answered the phone in less than five seconds. This was very rewarding, and they spoke clear and fluent English, talked me through the process of what it would take to upgrade my license, and listed the documents I would need. I also had questions about the processing time for the REAL ID, and they talked to me about estimated timeframes and a few things that I could do to help expedite the process so there would not be any delays.

While initially confusing, the customer service for the Illinois DMV turned out to be excellent.
