What are the rules for rent increases?

Asked a year ago
In British Columbia, the rules for rent increases are regulated by the Residential Tenancy Act. Landlords must provide tenants with written notice of any rent increase at least three months in advance. The maximum amount for the rent increase is determined annually by the government. In 2022, the maximum allowable increase is set at 1.5%. Landlords cannot increase rent more than once within a 12-month period and must use the approved Notice of Rent Increase form. However, there might be exemptions for certain rental units, such as subsidized housing or those with occupancy for less than one year. If a tenant believes the rent increase is unjustified, they can dispute it with the Residential Tenancy Branch.
