What Is the Baggage Allowance for Cathay Pacific Airlines?

It's always tempting to try to take as much as you need when it's time for vacation, but airlines like Cathay Pacific have baggage allowance limits. The good news is that this airline makes it easier to calculate yours depending on flight class and if you're part of a frequent flyer program.

Whether you call it Cathay Pacific Airways or Cathay Pacific Airlines, you're still referring to the flag carrier of Hong Kong founded in 1946. Cathay Pacific provides services to more than 60 countries and close to 200 destinations. Like most other airlines, there are rules to follow when it comes to carry-on and checked baggage. Most customers familiar with Cathay Pacific know that the airline follows baggage allowance based on weight. However, Cathay Pacific recently began to shift toward a per piece policy. You will still see allowances based on weight and dimensions.

Baggage Allowances At-a-Glance

Cathay Pacific limits cabin baggage to 14" x 9" x 22" maximum, small baggage is 16" x 6" x 12" and checked baggage is no more than 62" total for the sum of its length, width, and height.

Please note that although the baggage dimensions remain the same regardless of which class of flight you book, business and first-class are allowed heavier weight limits than the economy classes. You're also allowed two checked baggage items on every flight regardless of class.

Both economy classes allow for one cabin bag of 7 kg or 15 lbs and one bag small enough to fit under the seat. Business class allows for one bag weighing 10 kg or 22 lbs while you can bring 15 kg or close to 33 lbs in first class.

Checked baggage weights also differ in the classes:

  1. Economy and premium economy are 51 lbs maximum.
  2. Business and First Class are 71 lbs maximum.

If you're part of a frequent flyer program, you may want to see if that adds to your baggage allowance. You can use the website's baggage allowance calculator or call Cathay Pacific's 24-hour customer service if you have any questions.
