If you recently took a look at your Bank of America statement and found a charge you didn't make, or a charge that is higher than you expected it to be, you may be the victim of fraud. You need to learn how to report this fraud to the bank and hopefully get your money back. You can report the fraud online, on the Bank of America app, or over the phone, but there are some other steps you need to take before making the report.
If you want to get the charge taken off of your bill or reduced, you need to inform the bank of the problem within 60 days of the date the bank statement containing the fraudulent charge you was sent to you.
If you take a close look, you might find that it is not a fraudulent charge after all. Perhaps you or someone else who has authorized access to your account made the charge and subsequently forgot about it. Maybe there was something you had on autopay that slipped your mind. Maybe, when you ordered something, you didn't notice that a box was ticked that added extra features to your order.
If you have determined that the charge really is not the result of an error on your part, continue on with the next steps.
Bank of America usually prefers that you try to work things out with the merchant, if possible, so it's good to start there. Additionally, it is always possible the the charge was a mistake and not fraudulent, and the merchant will fix it once you tell them about it.
If contacting the merchant does not resolve the matter, proceed with the next step.
