I'm from a generation that likes to talk to people instead of just doing everything online. While I can use the internet, and quite well, I prefer to book in person so I can ask my questions and get answers before I press confirm. For that reason, I decided to call Westin Hotels before I booked my hotel for my Pittsburgh stay. The company did eventually connect me with a representative, but it is clear from their directories that they prefer digital bookings. 

When I first called, a virtual agent answered and said, "Thanks for calling Marriot. How may I help you today?" I answered, "Help with a booking," which seemed very clear but the system didn't understand me. It said instead, "I am not sure I understand, you can say things like cancel a reservation, and rewards balance." This time through I said, "Help with a reservation," which did work, but it seems to me like that was a basic enough request both should have worked. 

It then said, "I can send you a text message to send you a direct link with the information you requested. Currently, texting is only available on US phone numbers." When I answered no, because I called to talk to a representative, the virtual agent responded with, "Okay, just so you know, the best way to book a Marriot hotel is via the internet or our mobile app." This was a bit offputting to me since clearly, I was on the phone because I wanted to talk to someone, but I persevered and it did eventually place me on hold. The hold music was Lynyrd Skynyrd and overall the wait wasn't more than 15 minutes, but I felt the tone of the messaging service could have been better.
