I have a pending citizenship application with USCIS, so I wanted to call and check on it, but I was at work so I didn't have the proper documentation accessible. I quickly learned that when you call USCIS you need to have all of your information available or you aren't going to get anywhere. They will only look you up by your receipt number and not by name, work ID number, or any other identifier. The call system is very strict and there is no way to bypass the automated system unless you give them this information. 

I called and was immediately greeted by an automated voice that said, "Thank you for calling US or USCIS. To ensure a high quality of service, we record our calls." There was then a large pause about a court case in Texas that made some type of stay illegal for the moment, and then another message about their privacy act notice. At this point I was well into the call a few minutes and not even to a menu yet. Finally, it said, "I can understand full sentences, how can I help you?"

I said that I wanted to talk to an agent about my case, and it responded by saying, "Before I can help you, I will need your receipt number, do you have your receipt number now? It is three letters followed by ten numbers. Don’t forget if you move during the application process you need to notify us immediately or your application will be delayed."

I tried to tell the system several times that I didn't have the number, but it responded in various ways to tell me that I couldn't get to an agent without it. Finally, it said, "I’m sorry, I can’t transfer you without more information about what you are calling about. If you are ready to give me the reason for your call, I will try to assist you. Now please tell me what you are calling about."At this point, I hung up and figured I'd just have to call when I was home and able to get that number.
