Do you plan on moving? You can schedule an appointment to start, transfer, or stop service to your new location. You may schedule the appointment up to a week before the moving date. National Grid suggests that customers give them a notice of five to seven days. This gives them enough time to have their crew in your home.

Moving In

When you first move in to your new home, you need to activate National Grid service. The process is the same for both gas and electricity.

If service is still running from the old occupant of your home, National Grid will make an estimated meter reading. They don't need to visit your home. If you wish, electricity or gas will be set up in your home on the same day.

If the old owner of your home moved out some time ago, it is likely that your service may have been deactivated. National Grid requires you to make a request for your meter to be switched on. You may have to wait up to five business days and your meter has to be switched on in person.

Activating Your National Grid

If you want to activate your National Grid account, you may do it online or on the phone. You will be required to provide the following information;

  1. Your name
  2. Your full contact information including your phone number and email address
  3. Your passport number or Social Security Number
  4. The expected date of moving in
  5. The address of your new home including street name, street number, zip code, and unit number

If you are renting, National Grid may require you to provide them with a copy of your lease. They may also need the contact information of your landlord.

Whether you use electricity or natural gas, you need to pay for the cost of energy as well as the cost of delivery.

National Grid makes sure that energy is delivered to your home. They build and maintain the whole system.

National Grid focuses on transmitting and distributing electricity across the country. Therefore, it is National Grid that is charged with the responsibility of delivering electricity to your home.

Since it is a transmission and distribution of energy is a regulated utility, National Grid is the only that offers and deliver energy service. However, the prices they charge are monitored by the New York Public Service Commission.

Did you know that you have a choice of how much you pay for the electricity and gas that you use? This is a plus considering we usually do not have a choice of utility. You are allowed to choose any of the supplies you please. You can choose among the many ESCOs in New York.

In case you need to set up service at National Grid, then feel free to either use your phone or visit their website and follow the steps outlined above. If you choose National Grid as your default gas and electricity supplier, then they will be the ones to charge you for the energy you consume or respond to any issues that may arise at any time.

Therefore, by following the steps outlined above you should be able to set up a service with National Grid and expect electricity to reach your home or office. However, sometimes the process can be hectic and instead encounter issues during setting up of a service with National Grid. In such instances, feel free to contact National Grid, and they will help you sort out the issue. Their help will go a long way in ensuring you set up the service without any complications.
