Sadly, this happens frequently but the important thing is that you can get through this by applying for unemployment benefits. This guide will help you file an unemployment insurance claim with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Assistance.

Eligibility
1. You lost your job or had your hours reduced due to no fault of your own.
2. You earned enough income during the base period.
3. You are willing and able to look for and accept work.
4. You are applying the same week you lost your job or had hours reduced. If you miss this deadline, you can still apply but your claim cannot be backdated to your last day.

Application Methods and Schedule
1. Call them by phone here Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Please note that there is a posted customer service phone schedule to call located under the Contact Us link under the applicant section on uimn.org.
a. Select your language and enter your social security number. Those who need a different language can select 1 to receive interpreter assistance.
b. If you already have a claim, the system will ask you for your password. If your social is not recognized you can choose either frequently requested information or apply for benefits. Follow the prompts to fill out your claim.
c. You should be transferred to a customer service agent to complete your claim.


2. To file online, go to uimn.org and click on Applicants and then click on Apply for Benefits. Keep in mind that there might be an online schedule showing when you can apply for benefits and your weekly payment. The online system is available from Sundays through Fridays from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m.
a. If you've filed before, you'll need to enter your social security number without dashes and your password. If you're new, you'll need to enter your social security number without dashes. Please note that entering your social security number incorrectly means your identity can't be verified and benefits will be denied.
b. You can call based on the last digit of your social security number or go online on Thursdays and Fridays, which are for anyone who needs them.
c. There will be important topic links available in case you want to learn more about the application process, but when you are ready to apply, click on Start the Unemployment Benefit Application. Complete each page and you will be able to review your entries before you submit your claim. You will see a confirmation page after you submit your claim successfully.

Information You Need to Provide
1. Your social security number and driver's license number, or state-issued I.D.
2. Contact information including your mailing address and best phone number.
3. Your 18-month employment history including names, addresses, phone numbers, month and year of employment, pay rate, and reason you are no longer with the employer.
4. Your direct deposit information
5. Those who were in the military anytime during the last 18 months need their DD-214 member 4.
6. Those who were federal employees anytime during the previous 18 months need both their SF-8 and SF-50.
7. Non-U.S. citizens need their work authorization documents.
8. Union members need the name and local number of their union.
