If your American Express card has been lost or stolen, you need to take immediate action. If someone has your card, you need to make sure you don't end up on the hook for the charges they make. You will also need to get a replacement card, so you can get back to living your life like normal. You should also request a replacement if your card has been damaged and it no longer reads well.

Requesting a Replacement Online

American Express recommends that you use the online card replacement request form if your card was lost or stolen. Once the company receives the form, it will cancel your missing card. To request a replacement, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the American Express home page.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Click on the Help link in the upper right corner.
  4. Click on Replace a Card.
  5. Fill out the form.

If you are requesting a replacement because your card is damaged, you can continue to use your old one until you receive the replacement.

As part of filling out the form, you will have to request a delivery option. Free next-day shipping is available in most areas. Your new card should ship within a day or two. American Express will send you a notification when it is shipped.

Requesting a Replacement by Phone

If you do not have an online American Express account, you will need to request the replacement by phone. Just call the toll-free phone number.

Any recurring payments that were linked to your old card will be automatically transferred to your new card.

Contacting American Express

If you need to contact American Express, you can do so by phone or by help forum.
