Unemployment is an obstacle that millions of Americans have or will face in their lives. Economies are bound to cycle through peaks and recessions, which means that we should be prepared for whatever comes our way in either scenario. This holds especially true given the alarming state of America with the COVID-19 pandemic. As we witness businesses laying off employees at a concerning rate, we should take this opportunity to understand the resources that are available to help in times of crisis. Luckily, if you live in Idaho, unemployment is a challenge you will be able to easily manage.

The Idaho Department of Labor has a user-friendly website that makes the process of filing for unemployment very easy. However, before you apply, it is important to review their eligibility requirements. First, you must be out of a job through no fault of your own. This means that you cannot quit your job and collect unemployment benefits. You also must be able and ready to work full-time and actively seek work. Additionally, there are monetary requirements you must meet. According to their website, you must have worked and been paid in at least two of the quarters in the base period, with wages totaling at least $1,872 in one of those quarters. The total amount you were paid in your base period must be one and a quarter times your wages in the highest quarter. In this context, the base period they are referring to is the four quarters of earnings that determine how much unemployment you are eligible for.

If you meet these requirements, you can apply at https://www.labor.idaho.gov/claimantportal. If you are a first-time user, click "Register" near the bottom of the page to begin setting up your account. At this time, they do not accept applications over the phone. Keep in mind that after you file your claim, you must also file for your waiting week. The waiting week is the first week you file a weekly certification application, which is not paid. You can expect to receive your first payment about two and a half weeks after you submit an application.

Unemployment can be frightening, but if you know how to utilize the resources that are available to you, you will be able to get back on your feet in no time!
