What Is a Wire Transfer?

A wire transfer is an electronic payment between two banks that does not go through a clearinghouse. It's a fast method of transfer, and domestic wire transfers frequently go through on the same day. However, international transfers can take somewhat longer, depending on the country and the currency exchange rate. Wire transfers are typically used when the money needs to get to its destination quickly or when the amount is large or particularly important.
