How Do I Dispute a Charge on My Citi Card?

If you believe that a charge on your Citibank credit card is invalid, you can initiate a dispute with the company. Before you do so, however, you should attempt to work the matter out with the merchant making the charge. If that is not possible, you can make use of Citibank's short and simple dispute process.

If you have a card from Citibank and have noticed a charge that you believe is inappropriate, you can dispute the charge with the company. This article will teach you how.

Before You Begin the Dispute

Before you dispute the charge with Citibank, you should try to contact the merchant who is responsible for the disputed charge. The merchant has quicker access to the information related to your purchase and could resolve the issue for you much faster than Citibank could. If the merchant cannot be reached or refuses to work with you to resolve the issue, then you can begin the dispute process with Citibank.

Initiating the Dispute with Citibank

After trying to work with the merchant, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to Citibank's website.
  2. Log into your Citibank account.
  3. Click on Account Details
  4. Look for the transaction you wish to dispute in the list of your Citi Card transactions.
  5. Select that transaction.
  6. Click on Dispute Charge.

After you have completed the above steps, Citibank will acknowledge the start of the dispute process by sending you an email to that effect. The company will contact the merchant, look over the details of the transaction, and then inform you once it has come to a decision. The length of time this process takes can vary greatly, depending on the details of the situation. If the company decides in your favor, they will return the amount of the charge to your account. While the dispute is ongoing, you will not be charged any fees or interest. You can continue to use your Citi Card normally.
