If you have a BMW car or are looking to buy a BMW, and you want to check whether your vehicle has a safety recall, but you are unsure of the process, this guide will help you.

You like BMWs because they look good and have a reliable reputation. However, you need to check whether your car has any recall notices, but you are unsure of how to do so.

Fortunately, checking whether a BMW car has a recall or safety notice is a simple process that can be carried out online via the BMW website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

If you want to find out how you can check for recalls on your BMW, read this easy to follow article.

Checking For Recalls On The BMW Website:

One simple way to find out whether there is a recall on your BMW is to visit the BMW website.

Once you have located the homepage, find the "Owners" tab in the top navigation bar. Select the "Owners" option and then the "Safety and Emissions Recalls" hyperlink under the "Caring For Your BMW" heading from the drop-down menu.

On the "Safety and Emission Recalls" page, you can enter your vehicle identification number to run a recall check.

Finding Your Vehicle Identification Number:

If you do not already have your 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) to hand, you need to find it before you can run a recall check.

You should be able to find your VIN under the lower left of your vehicle's windshield. Your VIN is also displayed on your vehicle registration card.

Once you have located your VIN, you can proceed to check your BMW for recalls.

Running a Recall Check:

Enter your 17-character vehicle identification number into the search bar provided on the BMW website, and click the "Search" button.

BMW will then run a recall on your car, and you should be able to see any existing issues.

Checking For BMW Recalls On The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Website:

Alternatively, you can check for vehicle recalls on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Website (NHTSA).

Navigate to the NHTSA website, and select the "Recalls" tab from the top navigation bar.

Once you are on the "Recalls" page, you can enter your 17-character VIN number, and press the search button to proceed with a recall check.

What A Recall Check Shows:

It is important to understand what is flagged up during a BMW recall check.

Recall checks show unrepaired recall notices from the last 15 years. These checks will not flag up any recalls that were issued more than 15 years ago.

In addition, safety recalls issued by small, non-major vehicle manufacturers may not appear.

If This Doesn't Work:

If after following these steps carefully, you are still unsure of how to check for BMW recalls, you need to get in contact with the BMW customer service team.

The BMW customer service team will be able to run a vehicle recall check on your car or explain how you can run an online check yourself.
