How do I read my utility meter?

Asked 6 months ago
Reading your utility meter is a straightforward process, and it helps you monitor your consumption of electricity, gas, or water. The first step is to identify the type of meter you have, as there are different styles for each utility. For an electricity meter, you will typically see a digital display or a series of dials. If it is digital, simply note the number displayed, as this represents your kilowatt-hour usage. If your meter is analog and consists of dials, read the dials from left to right. It is important to record the number indicated on each dial, but you should note that if the pointer is between two numbers, you should record the lower number unless the pointer is directly on a number, in which case you will need to consult the next dial to the right. For gas meters, the method is similar. Digital gas meters will display the reading directly, while analog gas meters also have rotating dials. Again, read each dial from left to right and apply the same rules as with the electricity dials. Lastly, for water meters, the process remains consistent. Most water meters are either digital or have dials. Reading them is equally simple; note the numbers as you find them. For precise details on how to read specific types of meters, you may find it helpful to look at the current information available on the relevant Utility Warehouse webpage or documentation regarding meter readings.
