Introduction

If you are moving into a new home in either New York or Massachusetts then you may need to get new electrical and/or natural gas service with National Grid, which provides electrical and natural gas services across these states. Fortunately, this is pretty easy to do. However, it may take longer than you expect to get the process finished, so it's best to get started as soon as possible.

What You'll Need

National Grid performs a soft credit check when you sign up for a new service, to get an idea if you will be able to afford the payments for that service. This should not impact your credit score in any significant way, though. When you sign up for a new service, you will need to have all of your personal details available, including your social security number. You will also have to have your driver's license on hand.Once you start the process to sign up for new service, National Grid will take up to seven days to get your new service hooked up, so you are going to need to schedule the hook-up appointment several days after you make it. If you need service hooked up at a newly constructed building, there are a variety of permits, fees, and easements you may need to get first. Make sure these are all taken care of before you try to get a new service hooked up.

Go to the National Grid's Start a New Service page.

If, for some reason, you do not know the address of your new home, you will need to have the meter number to start the service.
Select either the residential or commercial customer option then click on the Continue button. Follow the prompts to finish ordering your new service.

How Do I Set Up Service with National Grid? (Step 1)

If you are building a new home, fill out the Electric Service Request Form.

Electric Service Request Form

To get service hooked up to a newly-built house, you will need to fill out a special form. However, before you start you are going to need a valid 911 address associated with the new construction. You can get one at your town office. You can then email the form to CustomerElectricConnectionsUNY@nationalgrid.com.

Alternatively, if you need electric service for a new construction, call National Grid instead of going online.

Instead of filling out the Electric Service Request Form, you can just provide the needed information over the phone by calling National Grid's customer service at 1-800-260-0054 on weekdays from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Conclusion

If you need a new electric and/or gas service hooked up, it won't require a lot of work on your part, probably not more than 5 minutes. However, it may take several days before you can actually get your appointment, so remember to schedule everything accordingly.
