What are the requirements to become a certified teacher in New York State?

Asked 2 years ago
To become a certified teacher in New York State, an individual must meet several essential requirements established by the New York State Education Department, Teaching Certification. First and foremost, prospective teachers are required to hold a bachelor’s degree from a college or university that is registered by the New York State Education Department or an equivalent accredited institution. Additionally, an individual must complete a teacher preparation program which includes coursework on pedagogy, child development, and specific content area knowledge. Another significant requirement is the completion of student teaching experience, typically part of the teacher preparation program. This hands-on training allows individuals to gain practical experience in a classroom setting, working alongside experienced educators. In terms of assessments, prospective teachers must pass a series of examinations, including the Educating All Students Test and the Content Specialty Tests relevant to the certification area in which they are seeking licensure. Effective September 2021, New York State has also introduced the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations which include performance assessments. Furthermore, individuals must also submit proof of completing workshops on child abuse identification and reporting, school violence prevention, and safe and supportive learning environments. After fulfilling all these educational and procedural requirements, candidates can apply for certification through the New York State Education Department's online system. It is advisable for individuals interested in teaching to regularly consult the official New York State Education Department’s website for the most current information regarding certification requirements and any changes that may occur.
